being a beginner is fun
Jul 07, 2025For the last couple of months, I've been gaming with my friend Raluca. She's another Hand in Hand Parenting instructor, and also a gamer mom!
We started with her teaching me Fortnite. IT WAS SO MUCH FUN!!!! We had a blast. I loved learning. I loved trying something new, and I LOVED the cars. lol. We played Fortnite six times. I enjoyed how quick it was. I enjoyed the collaborative nature of it - having a teammate. I enjoyed how the game changed. It was satisfying.
And last week, I got to start teaching her Minecraft!
First, I need to brag that my son set up a private Minecraft server for Mama Mavel. It's hosted in our basement, and works. I'm so proud of how much he's learned and how resourceful he is.
AND it was so much fun showing Raluca around Minecraft. I remember being a Minecraft newbie myself, and how confusing everything was. It was harder than I expected helping someone get oriented. There IS a lot to learn. Thankfully, Raluca, is a quick study, and has a great attitude!
We had a blast! Here's one of my favorite clips where I ask her to kill me. Right after this clip, we got stuck in a zombie death loop which was pretty funny.
The big take-a-ways for me from all of this are
-- that playing video games is WAY more fun with others than by myself.
-- that it's easy to learn new games if you're ok with being bad at it. And it DOES get easier. And the more you play the easier it is to learn something new. I've learned a lot.
-- that it's harder to teach a game than it looks.
All of this gives me a lot of respect for my kid. He's had to be really patient with me learning. I'm really glad I took the time to learn, and to play with him when he didn't have others to play with.
Would you like to play Minecraft with me? I would LOVE LOVE LOVE to have more moms to play with! Reply to this email and let me know!
Keep on gaming,
Velma
